University of Maryland to Address Growing Worldwide Fir

Harvey Goldstein is an industry leader with a business presence in Singapore, Indonesia, and other Asian countries. As chairman of PT Harvest International Indonesia, Harvey Goldstein leverages his financial expertise to serves his clients, including the University of Maryland (UMD) at College Park.

A leading research institution, UMD has facilitated the creation of the International Fire Safety Consortium to combat the growing threat of fires around the world. Fire worldwide kills hundreds of thousands of people, injures even more, and drains one to two percent of the Earth’s Global Domestic Product.

Making matters worse, climate change has extended fire seasons and dried out vegetation, resulting in conflagrations such as the recent Australian wildfires. Further compounding the problem, the burden of fire casualties and damage falls disproportionately on the lower classes.

Joined by UMD, the consortium comprises universities in Australia, Scotland, and Sweden. They will study and exchange solutions on a variety of topics, such as combustion science, intelligent ways of exiting buildings, and how flames spread. Risk analysis, industrial protection systems, and the sociology of technology will also receive attention.

UMD’s Borderless Research Administration Knowledge Exchange helped get discussions started for the consortium. This problem-solving approach streamlines bureaucracy and promotes sharing best practices.
